Stay Away From Foods That are Always High in Sodium

Stay away from foods that are always high in sodium. Some of these common foods are:

* Processed foods such as cured or smoked meats, bacon, hot dogs, sausage, bologna, ham and salami
* Anchovies, olives, pickles and sauerkraut
* Soy Sauce (soybeans) and Worcestershire, tomato juice and other vegetables, and most cheeses
* Many dressings and salad dressings, mixed bottles
* Most of the snacks such as chips, cookies and other

When cooking, replace the salt for other seasonings such as pepper, garlic, herbs and lemon. Avoid packaged spice blends as these often contain salt. Use garlic and onion powder, not garlic salt and onion. Do not eat foods with mono sodium glutamate (MSG).

When eating, always ask for food steamed, grilled, baked, boiled and gold without any salt, sauce or extra cheese. If you think the restaurant could use mono sodium glutamate, ask you not to add to your order.

* Use olive oil and vinegar on salads and add fresh or dried herbs.
* Choose fresh fruit or sorbet when eating dessert.
* Remove the salt shaker off the table and replace it with a mixture of salt-free seasonings.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist which laxatives and antacids contain little or no salt, if you need these medicines. Some contain sodium.

If you have a softener or household water softener, do not drink tap water. Drink more bottled water. Which is the salt softens the water.

Ask your doctor if a salt substitute is safe for you, as many of them contain a lot of potassium. This can be harmful if you have certain medical conditions or are taking certain medications.
